Discover the Kleist exhibition in Berlin and Frankfurt/Oder.

The European University Viadrina is located in the middle of Europe – its hallmark is internationality. Students and teachers come from more than 85 countries; foreign language courses in the university language centre and time spent abroad at one of its circa 200 international partner universities are taken for granted. Since its re-foundation in 1991, the Europa University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) has developed into an internationally sought-after address on the German-Polish border. Currently, more than 6,000 students are registered.

In addition to Bachelor degree courses, the Viadrina offers a wide spectrum of research- and practice-oriented Master degree programmes in the fields of Cultural Studies, Law and Economics. Furthermore, there are specific interdisciplinary study programmes such as the Master of European Studies, which are designed and carried on a cooperative basis by all the university faculties.
There are close links between the Viadrina and Heinrich von Kleist – after all, the poet was born in Frankfurt (Oder) and began his studies of mathematics, physics, philosophy and history here in 1799. The events that we will be presenting during the “Kleist Memorial Year 2011” invite people to get to know various aspects of Kleist’s life and work from a university perspective. Visitors can explore Frankfurt (Oder) around 1800 in an exhibition, watch vintage film adaptions of Kleist’s dramas or discover at a conference what connections there were between 18th-century Europe, the Carribean and notions of globalisation in Heinrich von Kleist’s story “The Engagement in Santo Domingo”.
