The winner of the Kleist Prize 2010 has been chosen: Ferdinand von Schirach, author and criminal defence lawyer.

Ferdinand von Schirach, born in Munich in 1964, is a well-known criminal defence lawyer in Berlin. In 2009, he made the best-received German literature debut of the year with his volume of stories “Verbrechen”, published by Piper-Verlag.

The recognised Kleist Prize will be presented to Ferdinand von Schirach during a matinee at the Berliner Ensemble theatre in Berlin on 21st November 2010. The laudation will be given by Frankfurt-based author Bernd Eilert, who was elected jury representative by the Heinrich von Kleist Society and therefore bears sole responsibility for the selection of Ferdinand von Schirach as prize-winner.
The Kleist Prize is endowed with 20,000 Euros. The prize money is donated by the publishing group Georg von Holtzbrinck, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, and the Ministries of Science, Research and Culture in the states of Berlin and Brandenburg.
The Kleist Prize is looks back on a long tradition. In the first and second decades of the last century, it was awarded to Hans Henny Jahnn, Bertolt Brecht, Robert Musil and Anna Seghers, for example. After the re-foundation of the prize in 1985, the prize-winners have included Alexander Kluge, Thomas Brasch, Heiner Müller, Ernst Jandl, Monika Maron, Herta Müller, Hans Joachim Schädlich, Dirk von Petersdorff, Barbara Honigmann, Judith Hermann, Albert Ostermaier, Martin Mosebach, Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Gert Jonke, Daniel Kehlmann, Wilhelm Genazino, Max Goldt and, most recently, Arnold Stadler.

The annually awarded Kleist Prize is endowed with EUR 20,000, making it one of the best-endowed of German literary awards. The prize money is donated by the publishing group Georg von Holzbrinck, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the Senate Administration of Science and Research (Berlin), and the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture in the State of Brandenburg.
Every year, a trusted representative decides on the recipient of the prize. In 2009, Péter Esterházy selected the southern German author Arnold Stadler.
