Winning Design for the New Building

On 14th July, the Lord Mayor of the Kleist City of Frankfurt (Oder), Dr. Martin Wilke, awarded prizes to the winners of the architectural competition for the museum’s new building. On 8th July, the prize jury headed by Prof. Lauber from Munich had unanimously awarded the first prize and prize money of 25,000 € to the design by Lehmann Architekten GmbH Offenburg in conjunction with Helleckes Landschaftsarchitektur, Karlsruhe. In its statement, the jury, whose members included Dr. Wolfgang de Bruyn, Ferdinand Nowak from the MWFK (Ministry of Culture) of the State of Brandenburg and Martina Bienhüls as a representative of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, highlighted the design’s outstanding achievement, which lay in its optimal fulfilment of the room programme in particular and extremely sensitive handling of the baroque architectural monument. The disciplined architectonic approach of the designer creates a poetic setting that nonetheless looks to the future – a modern, engaging concept for a new Kleist Museum in Frankfurt(Oder).

More than 200 architectural offices from Germany and several other European countries had applied to participate in the competition; in addition to 5 pre-selected offices, 9 further participants were chosen by lot. From the 13 designs ultimately submitted, the jury selected the work of Springer Architekten GmbH Berlin in collaboration with Weidinger Landschaftsarchitekten as second prize-winner and Reimar Herbst.Architekten Berlin working with landscape architects Kamel Louafi as third prize-winner. A fourth prize was also awarded and two other designs were highly commended.

The new museum building is being financed by the Federation, the State of Brandenburg and funds from the European Community. Dr. Wilke expressly thanked the federation and the state once again for this support. The building client for the 5.4 million project is the Kleist-Gedenk- und Forschungsstätte e.V.; the City of Frankfurt (Oder) is acting as subcontractor for the society.

Mr. Derling, Head of the Department of Urban Development, Building, Conservation and Culture, informed those present that preparation work for building would be completed in the 3rd quarter of the year and that actual building should start in the 4th quarter. The planned completion date for the museum is the end of 2012.

Wolfgang de Bruyn emphasised that at last, the new building will provide a means of storing - in a manner that meets the needs of conservation - the museum’s extensive collections, in particular the art, the theatralia, the valuable library, and the autographic material. It will also guarantee their presentation and availability to both museum visitors and internal and external research work.

Up until 23rd July, models and designs from the architectural competition are being shown in the assembly hall of Frankfurt town hall; the exhibition can be viewed Mondays to Fridays from 9 am to 12 noon. On 3rd September in the context of the “Short Night of Frankfurt Museums” an exhibition of the models will be opened in the cabinet of the house. Information will also be provided in a discussion between Wolfgang de Bruyn and a representative of the Office for Urban Planning, Research and Renewal (PFE). In this context, special emphasis will be placed on the progression of room content and the next stages in the building project.

A house for Kleist – follow-up colloquium with questions of interest

On 20th April 2010, a follow-up colloquium in the context of the competition for a new building at the Kleist Museum Frankfurt (Oder), including the design of outside areas, took place in the city’s town hall. The architectural offices (working groups) could glean details regarding the documents of tender and were able to question the representatives of the competition organizers, with the prize jury and other experts in attendance, e.g. Robert Graefrath from the State of Brandenburg’s Office for the Preservation of Monuments and the State Archaeological Museum, and Eckerhard Tattermusch, representative of the Chamber of Architects in Brandenburg. Ferdinand Nowak and Dr. Philipp Riecken from the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg explained the financing of the project and the time plan. Afterwards, the offices represented gained further information on a tour around the competition area and through the Kleist Museum. After the concluding discussion on questions of competition procedure and documents provided, the competition assignment and the room programme, the models were presented to the City of Frankfurt (Oder) by the Office of Buildings. The colloquium took place in an open-minded, constructive atmosphere and – in the unanimous opinion of the participants – made a decisive contribution to deeper understanding of content questions as well as sensitizing them to special requirements when handling of the building’s historical substance. We can definitely look forward to some exciting designs as a result!

Preparations for the building phase have begun

In the course of measures to prepare for building, the ailanthus tree (Latin Ailanthus altissima) also known as the “tree of heaven” was felled in the unused courtyard area of the Kleist-Museum on Faberstaße – where the new building is planned – on Monday, 15th March 2010. As the municipal office for parks and gardens stated, further preparations for construction will be made as the competition procedure gets underway for the new extension to the museum. These will include examinations of the construction foundation, archaeological investigations and the repositioning of the heating duct.

A firm decision in favour of the new extension building has now been taken! After Minister of State Neumann had agreed to commit the outstanding federal shares at a cost of 540,000 Euros in November, the subsidy funds to launch the competition provided by the State of Brandenburg were submitted to the City of Frankfurt (Oder) in December. The EU-wide announcement took place in January and the prize-winners will be identified in July, so that we can expect construction work to start in autumn 2010.

The competition was launched by the City of Frankfurt (Oder). Further information:
