The Kleist Memorial Year 2011 is an initiative of the German Federation, the states of Berlin and Brandenburg, and the City of Frankfurt (Oder) under the general management of the Heinrich von Kleist Society and the Kleist Museum.
In order to concentrate the German Federation’s responsibility for cultural and media politics, there has been a “Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media” (BKM) since 1998. This post has been filled by Minister of State Bernd Neumann since 2005. His tasks include supporting cultural institutions and projects of national and federal significance. Besides this, he is responsible for the consistent further development and improvement of the general conditions for art and culture.
The Federal Cultural Foundation (KSB) supports art and culture insofar as they come into the Federation’s field of responsibility. Its emphasis lies on the promotion of innovative programmes and projects in an international context. On application, it initiates and promotes projects in all sectors, with no thematic restrictions, and also develops its own programmes.
Heinrich von Kleist was born in Frankfurt an der Oder in 1777. As a Kleist city, today Frankfurt is especially committed to the great writer’s legacy. As a cultural memorial site of national importance, the Kleist Museum possesses the most comprehensive collection of documents concerning Kleist and his place in literary history. Every year, the Kleist Festival including the presentation of the Kleist Promotional Award for young dramatists draws many visitors to the city to experience its cultural scene.
